Showtime has released a first-look image for the third season of Penny Dreadful.

Poor Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), she’s had a rough time of it in previous seasons of the gothic drama, which looks set to continue in season 3 with the picture depicting a straitjacketed Vanessa being comforted in an Asylum’s padded room by American therapist Dr. Seward (played by new series regular Patti LuPone – who previously guest starred in season 2 as the Cut-Wife). Dr. Seward is said to be helping Vanessa with a new unconventional approach to battle “the evil forces she cannot seem to escape”.

New guest stars previously announced for season 3 include: Shazad Latif as Dr. Henry Jekyll; Christian Camargo as zoologist Dr. Alexander Sweet, who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Vanessa; Sam Barnett as Dr. Seward’s mysterious young secretary; Wes Studi as Kaetenay, an intense, enigmatic Native American with a deep connection to Ethan; Jessica Barden as Justine, a young acolyte to Lily (Billie Piper) and Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney); Perdita Weeks (The Tudors), as Catriona Hartdegan, a scholar with expert knowledge of the supernatural; and Brian Cox as Ethan’s father, Mr Jared Talbot.

Timothy Dalton, Josh HartnettRory Kinnear, Harry Treadaway and Simon Russell Beale will also reprise their roles as the regular cast in the nine-part series.

Penny Dreadful airs on Sky Atlantic in the UK and will return in 2016.
