Hermione Norris and Martin Clunes star in tense family drama “A Mother’s Son” for ITV1.

ITV1 has ordered 2 x 60-minute series A Mother’s Son, about a mother who suspects her son has committed a murder following the death of a schoolgirl – found in woods near a town in Suffolk.

Starring Hermione Norris (Spooks) and Martin Clunes (Doc Martin) the story will centre on the fallout of the murder when Rosie (Norris) suspects the crime when she discovers a pair of her son Jamie’s ( Skins actor Alexander Arnold) blood spattered trainers under his bed.

Rosie lives with her second husband Ben (Clunes) but finds solace in her former partner David (Paul McGann) and begins to question the behaviour of Ben’s son Rob from a previous marriage.

“Rosie is in turmoil by what she discovers – it’s too awful to believe it could possibly be true.  But as the evidence begins to stack up against her son, Rosie’s turmoil worsens,” said executive producer Myar Craig-Brown.

ITV Drama’s Victoria Fea adds: “A Mother’s Son is the story of an ordinary mother tormented by her suspicions and thoughts that her son may be capable of murder.”

“She’s confronted with this terrifying dilemma and has to ask herself, should she go to the police and give him up? She’ll wrestle with this throughout what is a very compelling drama.”

The drama is written by Chris Lang (The Little House), who will also pick up an executive producer credit alongside Myar Craig-Brown. Colin Wratten is the producer and Ed Bazalgette is the director.

A Mother’s Son will go into production in London and Suffolk later this month.
