BBC One military drama Our Girl is to return for a new 5-part series without its former lead Lacey Turner.

Instead former Coronation Street actress Michelle Keegan will take the helm as army medicĀ Corporal Georgie LaneĀ on a dangerous Āmission in Kenya.

The first series, written by Tony Grounds, attracted 6.3 Āmillion viewers, and followed Turner as Molly Dawes, an army medic in Afghanistan.

Keegan said: ā€œIā€™m a massive fan of the series so I canā€™t wait to be a part of it. Itā€™s going to be a big but exciting Āchallenge for me.ā€

A BBC spokesman toldĀ the Sunday People:Ā ā€œIt wonā€™t be an easy posting as she has to earn the love and trust of her fellow soldiers, and the greater respect of her commanding officer, while Āworking alongside aid workers in the worldā€™s biggest refugee camp.ā€

ā€œKenya will be full of surprises that will challenge Georgie professionally and personally.ā€

A BBC source said: ā€œMichelle ticks every box ā€“ sheā€™s talented and hugely popular.ā€

Our Girl series 2 will begin filming abroad in January, for transmission on BBC One in late 2016.
