Former ‘Corrie’ star lands lead in BBC drama
BBC One military drama Our Girl is to return for a new 5-part series without its former lead Lacey Turner.
Instead former Coronation Street actress Michelle Keegan will take the helm as army medic Corporal Georgie Lane on a dangerous mission in Kenya.
The first series, written by Tony Grounds, attracted 6.3 million viewers, and followed Turner as Molly Dawes, an army medic in Afghanistan.
Keegan said: “I’m a massive fan of the series so I can’t wait to be a part of it. It’s going to be a big but exciting challenge for me.”
A BBC spokesman told the Sunday People: “It won’t be an easy posting as she has to earn the love and trust of her fellow soldiers, and the greater respect of her commanding officer, while working alongside aid workers in the world’s biggest refugee camp.”
“Kenya will be full of surprises that will challenge Georgie professionally and personally.”
A BBC source said: “Michelle ticks every box – she’s talented and hugely popular.”
Our Girl series 2 will begin filming abroad in January, for transmission on BBC One in late 2016.
