The wait is finally over!

Fans of Doctor Who have been speculating since Matt Smith announced he was bowing out of the popular sci-fi drama, with it reaching fever pitch after if was announced the new Doctor would be announced exclusively in a live BBC One TV event.

Presenter Zoe Ball announced the new Doctor is… PETER CAPALDI.

The 55 year-old Scottish actor is best known for his role as spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker  in the BBC comedy series The Thick of It and its follow-up film In the Loop.

He’s also no stranger to the whoniverse having appeared in ‘The Fires Of Pompeii’ as Caecilius in 2008 and as John Frobisher in Torchwood: Children Of the Earth in 2009.

The gender of The Doctor was given away earlier today [4th Aug] by celebrity photographer Rankin, who ended speculation of The Doctor being a female. He tweeted: “Just photographed the next Dr Who for tonight’s announcement. Let me know what you think of the photo? He’s going to be an ace Dr.”

Betting had also been suspended on Capaldi adding weight to his appointment in the role.
