With the filming of the hotly anticipated second series of award-winning BBC One and Red Production Company hit drama, Last Tango in Halifax having commenced in June, we now have more information about the new six-part series.

As fans of highly talented Nicola Walker, here at Inside Media Track we’re very excited for the new series.

Derek Jacobi (Vicious, The Borgias) and Anne Reid (Upstairs Downstairs, Marchlands) are reprising the roles of love struck septuagenarians Alan and Celia, who rediscover their love for each other later in life, 60 years after they first met.

The first series, which aired on BBC One last year, won the coveted Best Drama Series award at this year’s BAFTAs with writer Sally Wainwright (Scott & Bailey, Unforgiven) also named best writer at the BAFTA Craft Awards.

The second series, currently filming in various locations around the north of England, picks up the dramatic storyline that had viewers on the edge of their seats last year. With Alan (Jacobi) having suffered a serious heart attack and the couples’ nuptials hanging in the balance, viewers were left wondering whether Celia (Reid) will once again lose the love of her life.

Meanwhile, Celia’s successful and uncompromising daughter Caroline (Sarah Lancashire The Paradise) is forced to face up to her newly discovered sexuality, the demands of her girlfriend Kate (Nina SosanyaSilk, Five Days), her mother’s prejudice and a failed marriage. While Alan’s daughter Gillian (Nicola Walker – Spooks, Scott & Bailey, Inside Men), both independent and insecure, finds herself in a surprising love triangle having cheated on her partner Robbie (Dean AndrewsLife on Mars, Marchlands) with Caroline’s hapless husband John (Tony GardnerFresh Meat, The Thick of It).

Sally Wainwright said: “The inspiration for Last Tango in Halifax was deeply personal so I am delighted that it also resonated with so many viewers – both young and old. The second series will bring even more dramatic twists, trials and tribulations for the characters with Alan and Celia’s love story continuing to be the beating heart of the series.”

Nicola Shindler, Executive Producer and founder of Red Production Company, said; “When we started developing Last Tango in Halifax we wanted to make a love story first and foremost. The audience instantly warmed to the simple and sincere affection between Alan and Celia, which endured despite the dramatic events that transpired around them. Series two promises even more ups and downs putting even the strongest bonds to the test.”

Made by Red Production Company production, the series is created, written and executively produced by BAFTA-winning writer Sally Wainwright, produced by Karen Lewis and directed by Euros Lyn. Executive producers are Nicola Shindler for Red Production Company and Matthew Read for the BBC.
