Details of John Hurt‘s character in the Doctor Who Anniversary Special have been revealed during a royal visit to the BBC studios in Cardiff.

According to The Telegraph, costume designer Howard Burden revealed to the Prince and the Duchess of Cornwall, that the anniversary episode will feature John Hurt as a “dark Doctor”.

He said: “There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn’t see a regeneration, and John Hurt will fit into that gap. He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor.”

Hurt was seen briefly at the end of the last series, which lead to much speculation about how he could be the Doctor and in what time frame. Now we know!

The special will also see the return of David Tennant alongside Matt Smith.

Jenna Coleman told the Royal couple: “We had three different Doctors in [the TARDIS]… John Hurt, David Tennant was back and Matt. Three different Doctors playing against each other.”
