ITV has released a picture (above) of Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt on set of new two-part drama, Dark Angel, as filming commences this week in North Yorkshire and County Durham.

Based on an extraordinary true story, Froggatt stars as Victorian poisoner Mary Ann Cotton – a serial killer, whose methods leave no visible scars, allowing her tally of victims to mount unsuspected by a Victorian society unable to conceive a woman capable of such terrible crimes.

Mary Ann travels around the North East, insinuating herself into unsuspecting families. Through adultery, bigamy, fraud and murder, Mary Ann betters herself socially and financially. But the more she kills, the greater the risk her crimes will finally be exposed …

Dark Angel also features Alun Armstrong, Jonas Armstrong, Laura Morgan, Sam Hoare, Emma Fielding and Penny Layden.

Dark Angel is produced by World Productions and written by Gwyneth Hughes (The Girl, Five Days) and will be directed by Emmy and BAFTA award-winner Brian Percival (Downton Abbey).
