Following the death of Moriarty (Andrew Scott) at the end of series two, Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) is in need of a new nemesis. Step forward Lars Mikkelsen who will play a character called Charles Augustus Magnussen in the modern day Sir Arthur Conan Doyle adaptation.
Mikkelsen is best known for his roles In the original Danish dramas The Killing and Borgen which aired on BBC Four.
Executive producer Sue Vertue revealed the news on twitter along with the promotional image (below). More details are yet to be released about his role, however it most likely links with the character of Charles Augustus Milverton, who appeared in the 1904 short story.
Sherlock series 3 will air on BBC One later this year.
