Catherine Tate (Doctor Who, The Catherine Tate Show) has joined the cast of
BBC One’s adaptation of David Walliams’ book, Billionaire Boy.

Billionaire Boy is the story of Len (John Thompson), who makes a billion from inventing a new toilet roll, and his 12-year-old son Joe (Elliot Sprakes) who appears to have everything he could want but what he really needs is a friend.

Catherine Tate will play Sapphire Diamond, a 40-something hand model who still likes to pretend she’s 21 and is dating Len for his money.

David Walliams (Little Britain, Big School) will appear as Mrs Trafe, a dinner lady at Joe’s school. James Fleet, Rebecca Front and Warwick Davis also star.

Walliams says: “I am thrilled we have put together another all-star cast of comedy greats for this adaptation. The script is bigger and better than the book and I am excited for everyone to see it on BBC One at Christmas.”

Billionaire Boy is made by King Bert Productions and adapted for TV by David Walliams and Kevin Cecil.

The hour-long special – which will air at Christmas – begins filming in Sheffield and Rotherham this month (Oct).
