Off-screen death for The Cardinal

Peter Capaldi‘s new role as The Doctor in series 8 of Doctor Who posed a bit of a problem for the writers, and those who have been watching him as Cardinal Richelieu in Sunday night drama The Musketeers. Namely he can’t film both due to time constraints.

Due to the writers lack of knowledge about Peter’s departure, the finale of series one ended with the Cardinal alive and set up to continue his villainy into a second series. So how will they write out the character you may ask?

Tom Burke who plays Musketeer Athos in the swashbuckling drama reveals the answer: “Come the next series the Cardinal will be dead. He’ll just be gone,” he told the Radio Times.

Adding: “We’re all like, ‘Where’s the Cardinal? Oh he’s dead.’ It’s a great example of economic storytelling.”

Mad Dogs star Marc Warren will be the new villain, Comte De Rochefort, a dashing and persuasive aristocrat with a talent for sword fighting and a taste for adventure.

Series 2 of The Musketeers is currently filming ten new episodes in Prague.
