BBC One comedy Citizen Khan has been commissioned for a third series of seven episodes following its RTS North West Awards win last week.

The Birmingham, family-based studio sitcom created by and starring Adil Ray, alongside writers Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto (The Kumars At No 42, Goodness Gracious Me), centres on larger-than-life, self-appointed community leader Mr Khan and his long-suffering wife and daughters.

Other cast members include, Shobu Kapoor, Maya Sondhi, Bhavna Limbachia and Abdullah Afzal in the British-Asian family sitcom.

Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, says: “Adil Ray’s finely written family sitcom has grown up on BBC One and established itself as a modern mainstream comedy hit.”

Adil Ray says: “It’s testament to the whole team that we have got this far. I just can’t wait to get back in the studio with the entire Citizen Khan family. As the great British public get even more familiar with Mr Khan, it really excites me when I think about the places we can go. The Bahamas?”

The BBC In-house Comedy is shot on location in Birmingham and in front of a studio audience at MediaCityUK, Salford.

Citizen Khan will air it’s Christmas Special on BBC One on Friday 20 December at 8.30pm with the third series to air in 2014.
