Classic children’s TV series, The Wombles is to make a return to our screens on Channel 5 with 52 new episodes to air on the channel’s popular pre-school strand, Milkshake in 2015.

The Wombles were created by Elizabeth Beresford in six novels first published in the UK by Bloomsbury Press between 1968 and 1976, Mike Batt, now owns the rights to The Wombles and wrote the programme’s original theme tune.

Mike confirms the new series will be CGI; “It will look more like stop motion but with great fur. We believe that there are audiences of new children who missed The Wombles the first time around and will be thrilled to see the brilliant high quality animation and new musical productions.”

Jessica Symons, Head of Children’s Channel 5 said “This show was so loved by generations of children and the time is right for it to gain a whole new following. The stories and characters are as compelling as ever and we’re excited to welcome The Wombles to Milkshake.”

The Wombles also went on to have eight top 40 single hits in the British charts, becoming the top selling singles group of 1975.

The TV series will be made by Dramatico Animation Ltd.
